Project Overview
Following the review of several non-flame waterproofing systems, it was agreed in collaboration with Steve at Anchorpoint Safety Systems Ltd that Liquiflex Pro would be the most suitable solution for this project. A refurbishment project was undertaken at a power station to address ongoing water ingress issues affecting a single-ply roofing system installed over a concrete deck. The existing roof was believed to include insulation, which required verification as part of the assessment prior to works commencing. A core sample was taken to confirm the original roof build-up and ensure the correct specification was applied. Originally specified two years prior, the project was delayed due to various reasons before works were able to proceed. The scheme comprised three roofs and a large canopy area, totalling approximately 1,500m². A 20-year warranty was issued upon completion, providing long-term assurance to the client.
The Challenge
The key challenge was to resolve water ingress while ensuring the longevity and performance of the roofing system in a demanding environment. The client required:
- A robust and durable waterproofing solution
- A system suitable for concrete deck applications
- High-quality materials and installation
- A contractor and product with a proven track record in similar power station environments
The Solution:
Based on previous successful projects, the decision was made to utilise the existing single-ply system as a carrier membrane, overlaid with the Liquiflex Pro waterproofing system. Installation was carried out by Anchorpoint Safety Systems Ltd, a contractor with extensive experience across similar sites.
The Liquiflex Pro system was selected following careful evaluation of non-flame waterproofing options, offering a robust, seamless solution ideally suited to the concrete deck substrate and complex detailing associated with the project.
This system has already been used on multiple power station projects with excellent results, providing confidence in both long-term performance and installation quality.
Benefits of Using Liquiflex Pro on This Project
Liquiflex Pro was selected not only for its general performance characteristics, but for the specific advantages it offered in addressing the unique challenges of this power station refurbishment.
Key project-specific benefits included:
- Effective resolution of water ingress: The seamless, fully bonded membrane directly addressed existing leaks by eliminating joints and weak points within the roofing system
- Compatibility with existing build-up: The ability to apply Liquiflex Pro over the existing single-ply carrier membrane avoided the need for costly and disruptive strip-out works
- Cold-applied for enhanced safety: With no requirement for hot works, the system significantly reduced fire risk—an essential consideration within a live power station environment
- Adaptability to complex areas: The liquid application allowed for easy detailing around penetrations, upstands, and the large canopy area, ensuring complete waterproofing coverage
- Resilience in adverse weather conditions: Despite installation taking place during one of the wettest UK winters, the system allowed works to progress efficiently without compromising quality
- Long-term performance assurance: The durability of the system supported the provision of a 20-year warranty, meeting the client’s requirement for a reliable, long-term solution
By aligning with both the technical demands of the roof and the operational constraints of the site, Liquiflex Pro provided a practical, safe, and high-performing refurbishment solution.
Installation:
Despite one of the wettest winters in the UK, the installation was completed efficiently and to a high standard. The experience and professionalism of the installation team ensured that:- Work progressed smoothly on site
- Quality standards were maintained throughout
- Environmental challenges were effectively managed
Quality & Safety Considerations:Given the sensitive nature of a live power station environment, quality control and strict safety compliance were fundamental throughout every stage of the project.Working within an operational facility required careful planning, coordination, and adherence to site-specific protocols to ensure minimal disruption and maximum safety. All personnel were fully briefed on site regulations, and appropriate risk assessments and method statements were implemented before work commenced.Key quality and safety measures included:
- Strict adherence to health and safety regulations for high-risk industrial environments
- Use of non-flame application methods, eliminating fire risk on site
- Continuous quality inspections to ensure correct system installation
- Safe access and working-at-height procedures in line with industry standards
- Close coordination with site management to maintain operational continuity
The Outcome
The completed system has successfully addressed the water ingress issues and delivered a durable, high-performance roofing solution. The client was extremely satisfied with:- The quality of workmanship
- The performance of the system
- The overall delivery of the project
Contractor Feedback
“We were looking for a product to address water ingress issues. The project went very well despite the weather, and Rubberseal provided the materials as and when we required them to be delivered to site, and a 20-year warranty. Neil Curley was on hand for advice throughout the entire project, visited site regularly and provided detailed progress reports.” — Steve, Anchorpoint Safety Systems Ltd.
