The Project
Rubberseal was approached to provide a complete waterproofing solution for a 90m² flat roof at a new build residential property in Woodford, Stockport.
The property was being developed to a high specification, with the homeowner taking a hands-on approach to the design and construction. Having previously worked on the customer’s former home, roofing contractor Culmen Roofing NW was familiar with the client’s expectations and commitment to achieving a quality finish.
One consideration was the potential future use of the flat roof. The homeowner had yet to decide whether the roof would eventually accommodate a green roof system or solar panels, so the waterproofing specification needed to take these possibilities into account.
Working alongside Culmen Roofing NW, Rubberseal specified and supplied a high-performance roofing system designed to provide reliable waterproofing, effective vapour control and long-term durability.
The Solution
Rubberseal recommended a warm roof system incorporating carefully selected materials to deliver dependable performance.
The roofing build-up included:
- 18mm OSB Deck: Providing a solid structural substrate for the roofing system.
- ProVap S/A Vapour Control Layer: A fully adhered, self-adhesive vapour barrier designed to help control moisture movement within the roof construction and reduce the risk of interstitial condensation.
- 150mm Roof Insulation: Providing thermal protection, with insulation joints taped as part of the installation.
- 18mm OSB Overlay: Providing a suitable surface for the waterproofing membrane.
- Elevate RubberCover 1.5mm EPDM Membrane: A durable, flexible waterproofing membrane designed to provide long-lasting protection against the elements.
- Elevate Primers, Splice Tape and Cover Tape: Providing secure bonding and reliable waterproofing at membrane joints and details.
The decision to use a 1.5mm EPDM membrane was influenced by the homeowner’s potential plans for a future green roof or solar installation.
The thicker membrane was selected by the contractor as a precautionary measure to provide a robust waterproofing solution while the final plans for the roof remained undecided.
Any future green roof or solar installation would require separate assessment of the roof’s structural capacity, system compatibility and appropriate protection measures.
The Installation
The 90m² roofing system was installed by Culmen Roofing NW, with installation carried out by Daniel Torme.
The installation began with the preparation of the 18mm OSB roof deck, followed by the application of the ProVap S/A vapour control layer.
The contractor was particularly impressed with the VCL, praising its ease of use and overall performance during installation.
A 150mm insulation layer was then installed, with joints taped before the addition of an 18mm OSB overlay.
The waterproofing installation was completed using the 1.5mm Elevate RubberCover EPDM membrane, together with the appropriate bonding products, primers and detailing tapes.
The contractor highlighted the excellent tack and adhesion achieved with the Elevate primer, splice tape and cover tape, commenting that the products performed exactly as required without concerns about peeling or lifting.

Following completion of the installation, Culmen Roofing NW provided outstanding feedback on the roofing materials and the service received from Rubberseal.
The contractor was particularly complimentary about the quality of the ProVap S/A vapour control layer and the performance of the Elevate RubberCover EPDM system.

Rubber absolutely bang on. We used the 1.5 as the customer was unsure if the roof was going green or solar.
Rubber primer was spot on, nice and tacky. Splice tape and cover tape the same.
Honestly can’t fault any of the products.”
The contractor also praised the performance of the adhesives compared with other systems previously used:

The Result
The completed installation has delivered a 90m² high-performance flat roof for a new build residential property, incorporating a fully adhered vapour control layer, 150mm insulation and 1.5mm Elevate RubberCover EPDM waterproofing.
The contractor was extremely satisfied with the performance of the entire system, particularly the strong adhesion achieved with the primers and tapes, the quality of the VCL and the ease of installation.
The homeowner was equally pleased with the completed roofing works, which form part of a carefully planned new build project.
With the potential for a future green roof or solar installation still under consideration, the project demonstrates the importance of discussing long-term requirements during the initial roofing specification.
